Can two files with the same name be opened simultaneously?

Do you know, that… ?

You can open the same file at the same time, there is one condition, however.

Example.

The situation is as follows. We have a device design, all files are stored on the server in a directory created for this project.

The next customer comes, who wants to buy a similar device, but modified. The company does not use PDM. So I copy the content directory and paste it into the new directory. Just modify the assembly from the new catalog and it's ready. But in practice, you will need to open both assemblies / subassemblies or parts at the same time. And what then?

It's not possible.

There is a solution, involves running two program sessions. We run SOLIDWORKS and open files.

We run the program once again. The consequence of this is a message about not working AutoRecover.

In the second program, we open the same assembly. Of course there will be information, that it is used and will be read-only. But you can open and browse.

However, it is possible.

It is not a perfect solution, because we cannot exchange files between assemblies. Often in this situation (copies of projects) there are parts with the same name but different geometrically. So running the program twice will not help much.

The best solution is to use it anyway unique names. Then you can open two assemblies in the program and freely replace files, compare them etc..
