Default templates and their optimal settings

Do you know, that… ?

As you know, when creating new documents in SOLIDWORKS, appropriate templates should be used. Default templates are installed with the program, however, each company can create its own templates. This is especially important in terms of specific settings (document properties) and custom properties.

W system options there is a setting Default templates. You can choose one of two options there:

  • Always use these default document templates or
  • Ask the user to choose a document template

Which option should you choose?

It depends on the situation. If your company uses many templates (e.g. part in inches, part in millimeters or a quote drawing, executive drawing), then your better choice will be Ask the user to choose a document template. It is true that you must select a template each time, but we have the option to choose it. On the other hand, if only one template has been defined in the settings, the above setting does not make sense.

When else is it worth changing to Always use these default document templates?

I will distinguish three such situations.

1. When opening imported files. If it's on Ask the user to choose a document template and you open the assembly, a template must be indicated in each section…

2. In operation Split, which results in the necessity to indicate a template for each separated object (for potential subscription to submission).

3. The third situation is this, when we save a multibody part to assembly. Also leaving options Ask the user to choose a document template results in the necessity to indicate a template for each part. So it's definitely worth including Always use these default document templates.

You can read more about it below.

It is a good idea to change this setting before saving a multibody part

Remember, too, that having multiple versions of SOLIDWORKS installed at the same time, default templates are imposed by the first installed version! Means, that if you install the first version e.g., SW2020 and later SW2018 or SW2015, each version will have SW2020 templates by default. Effect – they cannot be used in older versions!
